Becoming a Police Officer

Becoming a Police Officer can take a very long time , but there are some things you can do to prepare yourself. There are some requirements mandated by state law or regulations. but some Police Departments have additional requirements to be hired. Therefore, requirements can vary from one department to the next.

To increase your chances of getting hired, you can do the following, if you haven’t already done so.

  • U.S. citizen
  • High School Diploma or GED (some departments require up to 60 college credits)
  • NY State Driver’s Licence
  • Drug free
  • No felony criminal record
  • No domestic violence convictions.
  • Take many exams
  • Physical fitness
  • Attend a pre-employment Police Training Course (more useful for small departments)
  • Clean work history
  • Live in the jurisdiction in which you want to work
  • Become a Police Cadet (NYPD)
  • Good credit history
  • No visible tattoos when wearing a short sleeve shirt
  • Appropriate social media activities
  • Research the job requirements for the departments in which you would like to work.
  • Healthy living (no smoking)

Since you will have to complete a physical assessment test before you can be hired, take the time to get into shape. See the physical agility test used by some departments below.

I would recommend you consult with a doctor before you start any type of exercise activity.
