  • Exceptions: 30 college credits may be waived, if the candidate has either:
  • received an Honorable Discharge from the United States military after two years of active military service;
  • -or-
  • successfully completed a Certified Police Officer Training Course approved by, or equivalent to a course approved by, the New York State Municipal Police Training council. A certified Peace Officer Training course does not qualify. Completion of a Phase 1 Academy, in and of itself, is insufficient due to the fact that during said training no instruction is received in the area of Firearms, Ballistic Baton, or Weapons of Mass Destruction. Without this additional instruction, along with the completion of the Field Training Officer program, the Phase 1 Academy is deemed insufficient by the New York State Municipal Training council and thus the 30 credits will NOT be waived.

Incumbents will receive salary increments reaching $92,073 per annum at the completion of five and one
half years of employment. There is an annual uniform allowance of $1,100 and contributions by the City to Welfare and Annuity Funds and City-paid health insurance. In addition, after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of

Duties:

Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control,
job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional
facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities;
inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to
detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other
area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and

verify identification of inmates; supervise inmates of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform
related work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have:

  1. successfully completed 39 semester credits at an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education, and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). In addition, you must complete an additional 21 semester credits, which may be satisfied by successful completion of Academy training, to total 60 semester credits by the end of Academy training; or
  2. a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of
    Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and have completed two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service; or
  3. a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of
    Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and, two years of satisfactory, full-time experience (a) in positions classified as Police Officers pursuant to Section 1.20, subd. 34, of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law, or (b) in positions classified as Peace Officers pursuant to Section 2.10 of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law, or (c) in positions designated as Special Patrolman pursuant to Section 14-106 of the administrative code and Chapter 13 of Title 38 of the Rules of the City of New York, or (d) in positions in Federal law enforcement or law enforcement in other states or municipalities with status or designations equivalent to (a), (b), or (c) above; or
  4. six years of active service in the Army Reserve, the Army National Guard, the Navy Reserve, the Air
    Force Reserve, the Air National Guard, the Marine Corps Reserve, or the Coast Guard Reserve with an
    honorable discharge. Time spent in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) will not count towards six years of active service.

Starting Salary

Education and Experience Requirements:

By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have:

  1. a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or

    regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S.

    If you were educated outside of the United States, you must have your foreign education evaluated to determine its equivalence to education obtained in the United States. You will receive instructions from the Department of Finance during the pre-employment screening process regarding the approved evaluation services that you may use for foreign education.

  • Pass a qualifying physical test.

Qualifications

Candidates must be at least 19 years old on or before the date of the written test. Eligibility for appointment begins when the candidate reaches 20 years of age. APPLICANTS WITH A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR AN EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA ISSUED BY THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE TEST, BUT WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT UNTIL THEY MEET THE COLLEGE OR MILITARY REQUIREMENTS AS STATED ABOVE. NOTE: Applicants who hold a comparable diploma issued by any commonwealth territory or possession of the United States or by the Canal Zone; or hold a report from the United States Armed Forces certifying completion of the tests of general educational development, high school level are eligible to take the test.

Special Requirements

Candidates must be legal residents of Westchester, Putnam, Rockland or Nassau County, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn or Staten Island at time of application. Preference in appointment MAY be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the City of New Rochelle for at least four (4) months prior to date of the written examination. A CANDIDATES RESIDENCY WILL BE VERIFIED AT TIME OF FILING APPLICATION AND INVESTIGATED BEFORE APPOINTMENT.

(7) Physical and Medical tests.

Peace Officers with the New York Racing Association( NYRA) Security Department provide security for both Aqueduct  Racetrack and Belmont Park. The Security Department operates around the clock seven days per week.

Starting Salary: $17.60/Hour

Qualifications

  • Employee must pass a standardized physical fitness testing for law enforcement such as running, push-ups, sit-ups, and sit and reach. 
  • Three tests will be administered: 
    • Kneel/Stand Test 
    • Push-ups 
    • 5 Minute Cardiovascular Endurance Step Test
    •   Education Requirements:
    • You must have either a High School Diploma or a GED.

Park Rangers with the U.S. Park Service are responsible for enforcing federal laws, regulations and policies. They duties include patrolling front country and backcountry sites. They perform emergency medical services, search and rescue, and wildland/structural fire suppression.
